Feed Supply

Why feed supply is drawing producers . . .
Without a doubt, Kansas’ abundant forage is one of the biggest reasons why dairymen are moving to the area. Corn, one of Kansas’ largest crops, is readily available with over 300 million bushels produced annually. In addition, over two million tons of corn silage is harvested each year.
A new option in the region is distiller’s grain, available from local plants producing ethanol.
Alfalfa, a local forage staple, is grown on nearly a half-million acres in the region.
The quality of alfalfa and corn silage is often higher than in other areas of the country. Abundant sunshine, available moisture and irrigation, added to cooler nights, make for good growing seasons and harvesting conditions.
There are many local forage growers in the region willing to custom contract with dairy producers. This is helpful in lowering ration prices… just one of the benefits of locating in a significant livestock region. Local contractors are also available for hauling manure.
Agriculture is a way of life in Kansas.
